Clan Gatherings & Events

Creating a Scottish Society

The Bruce Festival is going to create a Scottish Society based on Clans. We will have the Clan Discussion Groups in our members section for open and ongoing dialogue about your clan and its heritage. Each Clan will have the opportunity to create your clan Group on the site, here all members of the clan can discus and engage in conversation as relates to your individual clans.

We will also be putting on several Clan Gatherings throughout the year so the clans can get together and compete in traditional events with a Grand Finally at our annual festival in late summer.

What is a Clan Gathering?

A Scottish Clan Gathering is basically a Grand Family Reunion, but way more epic. These events celebrate the rich heritage and traditions of Scottish clans. You’ll find people decked out in their clan tartans, engaging in traditional activities like Highland dancing, bagpipe playing, and athletic completions of the past such as caber tossing.

It’s a great way to connect with one’s roots, share stories and keep the history and culture alive. Can you imagine the energy and pride radiating from such a gathering? Would you be interested in attending one?

Clan History

Scottish clans have a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the 12th century. The term “clan” comes from the Gaelic word “clann”, meaning “children” or “family”. Originally, clans were extended networks of families who lived and worked together for mutual protection and support. Over time, they evolved into larger social organizations with a strong sense of identity and loyalty.

Each clan had its own chief, who was the leader and protector of the clan. Clans played a significant role in the history of Scotland, participating in many battles and alliances. They also had their own unique tartans, crests and mottos, which are still recognized and celebrated today.

What is a Registered Clan

A registered clan typically refers to a clan that has been officially recognized and documented by a governing body or organization. In the context of Scottish clans, registration involves having a clan’s tartan, crest and motto officially recorded with the Scottish Register of Tartans or other relevant authorities.

Traditional Scottish Games

There are several traditional Scottish games that have been used for many years at gatherings and Highland games. Often Clans compete in these games at the gatherings.

Here is a List of Traditional Scottish games:

* Caber Toss: Participants toss a large wooden pole, aiming for it to flip and land in a straight line.

* Hammer Throw: Similar to the Caber Toss but involves hurling a heavy hammer as far as possible.

* Tug-of-War: Two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope, testing their strength.

* Weight for Height: Participants throw a weight over a High Bar.

* Sheaf Toss: A bundle of straw is tossed over a high bar using a pitchfork.

* Stone Put: Like the shot put but with a stone.

* Kilted Mile: A race where participants wear kilts, adding a unique twist.

* Highland Dancing Competitions: Showcasing traditional Scottish dances.

These games are sure to infuse your gathering with energy and tradition.
