What is the Blarney Stone?

The Blarney Stone is a block of carboniferous limestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle, located near Cork, Ireland. According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of eloquence and persuasive speaking, often referred to as the “gift of gab.”

History and Legend

  • Installation: The stone was set into a tower of the castle in 1446.
  • Mythical Origins: Various legends suggest different origins for the Blarney Stone. One legend claims it was brought to Ireland by the prophet Jeremiah, while another says it was Jacob’s Pillow brought to Ireland by the prophet Jeremiah from the Holy Land.
