Thanks to “Braveheart,” the first (and maybe only) name most Americans tend to think of when they consider Scots who fought for independence is, of course, William Wallace. And while he was indeed a major figure in Scotland’s struggle to break free from England, he wasn’t the only one.

You may have heard the confusing-sounding name Robert the Bruce, but you may not know what he did. Robert the Bruce is considered the first king of a fully independent Scotland, and his route to the throne was a complicated and bloody one. He even got excommunicated at one point.
